Everything you need to know about dental braces: types, maintenance and duration of treatment

Because a smile in motion is already a smile in progress!

Thinking about braces (or have you been told about them)? You’re not alone. Braces are among the most common orthodontic treatments… but also the most effective for aligning teeth, correcting a malocclusion or improving jaw comfort.

At Amortho, we believe that a well-informed patient is a reassured patient. So here we explain everything you need to know about dental braces: the types, the care to be given, and how long it lasts, in real life.

What are the different types of pins?

Traditional Metal Pins

These are the best known (and often the most affordable). Reliable, resistant and efficient, they are now more discreet and comfortable than before. The colored elastics even add a personalized touch, especially popular among young people.

Ceramic Pins

Similar to metal braces, but made of a clear material or the color of teeth. Result? They are much more discreet, ideal for teenagers or adults who want a more subtle look.

Clear aligners (Invisalign type)

Not really pins… but just as effective in many cases! These removable aligners are almost invisible and very popular among adults. They allow you to eat and brush your teeth without constraints, but require excellent discipline (you wear them 22 hours a day!).

Lingual braces

Less common, these braces are attached to the back of the teeth, so they are completely invisible from the front. They are especially suitable for certain specific cases, and require an orthodontist with particular expertise.

Brooch maintenance: some good habits to adopt

Hygiène dentaire

With braces, brushing must be more thorough. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, ideally after each meal. It is also recommended to use special dental floss (or interdental brushes) to clean well around brackets and wires.

Adapted diet

Some instructions are temporary, but important:
Avoid sticky, crunchy, or hard foods (caramel, nuts, gum, chips, etc.)
Prefer food cut into small pieces, and chew on the opposite side of any more sensitive wire.

Regular follow-ups

The check-up appointments allow the devices to be adjusted and to ensure that everything is progressing as planned. At Amortho, we always keep an eye on the evolution… and we celebrate every little alignment win!

How long does a treatment with braces take?

The big question! And the famous answer… It’s: it depends.

On average, orthodontic treatment with braces lasts between 12 and 24 months. But the exact duration varies depending on several factors:
– The complexity of the case (slight overlaps or severe malocclusion?)
– The age of the patient
– The type of device chosen
– The regularity of appointments
– Observance of instructions (we see you, those who bite into hard 👀 candies)

Sometimes, we already see results after a few months. And once the active treatment is over, we move on to the restraint phase — an essential step in stabilizing the results.
