First Orthodontic Consultation in Vaudreuil-Dorion: What Really Happens, From Start to Finish
The first orthodontic consultation is the most important step in the treatment journey. This is when you decide, with confidence, whether or not to start treatment, when the plan best suited to your situation is established, and when you assess whether or not you get along with the clinic that will accompany you for one to three years.
Here’s what to expect during your first orthodontic consultation, step by step.
Why consult an orthodontist?
There are three main reasons why we consult an orthodontist:
- On the dentist’s referral, when he or she observes an alignment or occlusion problem during a routine examination.
- On their own initiative, for aesthetic reasons or to improve their smile.
- Due to a functional problem, such as difficulty chewing, jaw pain, or abnormal tooth wear.
Regardless of the reason, the first consultation always has the same two objectives: to make an accurate diagnosis and to plan the treatment best suited to your situation.
What happens during the consultation
A first serious orthodontic consultation lasts between 45 and 75 minutes and takes place in six steps:
- Intake and form (5-10 min) — Completion of the medical questionnaire.
- Preliminary Discussion (10-15 mins) — Discussion of your expectations and the reason for consultation.
- Clinical Examination (10-15 min) — Evaluation of the teeth, bite, and surrounding tissues.
- Diagnostic documentation (10-15 min) — Photographs, x-rays or digital impressions as needed.
- Analysis and treatment plan (15-20 mins) — Presentation of diagnosis, options, duration, and costs.
- Questions and Decision (5-10 min) — Answers to your questions and decision without pressure.
How long does a consultation last?
A serious orthodontic consultation lasts 45 to 75 minutes. Beware of 15 to 20-minute consultations: this is a commercial format, not a real diagnosis.
How much does an initial consultation cost?
A true first orthodontic consultation requires time, expertise and a real diagnostic process — a far cry from the 15- to 20-minute quick appointment that is sometimes found elsewhere.
At Archambault & Morton, this consultation is normally billed at $75. However, to allow you to make an informed decision, without obligation and without pressure, we offer it free of charge.
What to bring to your consultation
- Your insurance card
- Your medication list
- Your medical history
- Your orthodontic history (if applicable)
- Any treatment plans received elsewhere, if relevant
- Your questions, written in advance
Consultation for a child
A first orthodontic evaluation is recommended from the age of 7. This is a preventive assessment, not an immediate treatment: more than 50% of assessed cases do not require any treatment at this stage.
Consultation for an adult
In adults, the consultation takes into account several specific elements:
- Your previous orthodontic treatments
- Your periodontal health (gums and supporting structures)
- Your professional constraints and your lifestyle
- Discreet options (aligners, lingual braces, etc.)
- Possible preparation for implants or other dental care
What you should receive when you leave
At the end of a good first consultation, you should leave with:
- A clear diagnosis
- Treatment options discussed
- An estimate of duration
- An order of magnitude of costs
- Your questions answered
- No pressure to sign on the day
- The freedom to compare with other clinics
